SEO BANS Template

April 25, 2008 By: Justin | 11 comments

Well, I personally have jumped on the BANS (Build A Niche Store) bandwagon, but many people fail because they just install and leave. People like Vic have been teaching people how to set up BANS to optimize the money you make off them.

BANS has a lot of SEO strengths, but its basic design had some SEO flaws, a few flaws that I’ve fixed. This template is designed to be SEO friendly and better target your keywords.

SEO Changes

Unique H1 tag on every page
The default BANS template have your sites name inside of the H1 tag, and this applies to every single page. So you do not have a unique H1 on each page. And if you make an H1 in your content, it is diluted by having two H1 tags.

I’ve removed this H1 tag. Now, when you make content for your pages, you should create an H1 at the top that include your primary KW for that page! You now have a unique H1 for each page.

Sidebar AFTER the content
It is generally better to place your navigation AFTER your site’s content if possible. Google now sees all your content FIRST, and it places repetitive content like menus at the END.

H3’s on sidebar
The default BANS template uses h2 tags for the headings of the menus. I changed these to h3. This will allow you to use H2’s in your content to target a keyword and not have it diluted by the H2’s on the side bar!

Advice on BANS SEO

  • Target 1-3 keywords on each page. Research keywords and have a focus for each page.
  • Include KW’s in title. Separate with a |. Example: KW1 | KW2
  • Include your 1-3 KW in your meta keywords
  • Include as many of your KW’s in your description as possible.
  • Include your main keyword in the URL. If a multi word keyword, divide with dashes! NOT SPACES!
  • Create an H1 at the top of every page with a KW included.
  • If possible, use an H2 to further attack keywords (place at bottom, you want a minimal amount of content above the items).
  • Place content above and below the item listings. Keep top content minimal. Few sentences at top, a paragraph at bottom.
  • Bold a few of your keywords. Throw a couple of bolds into your content by bolding your keywords.
  • Interlink related pages! Inside of content send a link to other pages on the site. Use proper keyword as anchor text. This has a few purpose: pass internal juice around, deep linking, pass KW authority internally, and possibly gain a double listing in Google because you linked two posts.

Awesome template!

BANS is nice imo… making pretty good money with it.

Just uploaded to my BANS sites and works great. Now I have to go through and edit all my sites to include the unique H1’s.

Stupid question #1 :do you mean just add a H1 tag to the content on the page or is it actually in the header.php and if so where?
Stupid question #2 :how do you get your photo to show up next to your comment!

hey lissie! =)

You would just add an H1 to the actual content. On the default template, the site title is in a h1 tag, so you have the same h1 on each page. I just replaced that with a div. So this theme has no H1 tag be default.

At the top of each page you make, make an h1 tag and put in the primary keyword for that page. Then do your content like normal.

Does that make sense? If you have a hard time, let me know and I’ll email you an example.

To get the picture, use Gravatar: http://en.gravatar.com
Then use the email you used to sign up at Gravatar when you leave a comment. The avatar / icon / photo will then show up.

Hi Justin thanks a lot for this help. I’ve finally been able to tweak my BANS template properly because of this post. I’m clueless when it comes to coding but I stumbled my way through it. I have a question if you don’t mind.

I’ve done what you say and now I insert individual H1 tags on each post. My sidebar is H3 tags. Question: Do I need to add H2 tags? What I mean is, will the spiders hate going from H1 right to H3 tags?

Most of my store page articles are not really structured in that way and I’m not sure if I should focus more right now on getting more backlinks or if I should take the time to reword them and squeeze the H2 tags in. I guess I’m basically asking, how important are H2 tags with BANS? Thanks again!

I’ve seen videos with Matt Cutts from Google where he was asked if valid coding matters. He says they don’t penalize people for coding errors, because it isn’t really a judge of authority. Many .edu lab pages and research pages are coded by scientists with little HTML skill.
I do not think it’ll hurt you. It might be better coding if you get stuck on details, but links are more important.

Usually keyword usage in title, h1, start of content, and within content is fairly solid SEO. Beyond that, its just worrying over details.

I’d suggest building links. Then in the future if you have the time to spare, play around with what effect H2’s have on the site. Some times Google is goofy, so you can always play around and see how it affects rankings.

Excellent. I’ve been doing basically what you suggested. I put in H2s on one of my new pages and just been focusing on backlinks. If there is a major difference, hopefully I’ll be able to notice it. Thanks again Justin.
