More to Internet Marketing Than Links!
May 10, 2008 By: Justin | no commentsI follow Courtney and Vic constantly and one thing they push is WORK WORK WORK and LINKS LINKS LINKS. Vic and Court have proven they know how to get results and do it consistently. And they’re right to say that links are one of the most important SEO factors that determine your site’s ranks. So, whats the point of my title?
Internet Marketing is not SEO! SEO is a subset of Internet Marketing, and search engine optimization is not the end all, be all, of internet marketing. The truth about the net is that off line principles apply to online business and don’t forget that. At the end of the day, you deal with HUMANS. Yeah, bots rank you, but HUMANS buy your products.
Yesterday, Mark at Courtney Tuttle’s site made a nice post about Twitter. He concludes it is a useless tool for the most part. And know what, I agree mostly. Its a huge time sink. It does nothing to help you get ranked higher. it does not build links for you. Its a flop for SEO. I do not think Twitter is a waste for marketing though. It humanizes a blogger and allows them to easily connect to their followers (or at least allows their followers to feel connected). Marketing is just as much about building a brand as it is about get search traffic. Is Twitter the awesome MMO tool that many A-List bloggers may claim it is in their little ebooks, NO. It is one of many tools that allows you to connect easily to 1000’s of people. Don’t discount it just because it doesn’t help build links.
Twitter, in my mind at least, is a better method of reminding than mailing lists will ever be. Did you just launch a new product? Well jump on Twitter, I’ll be much happier with you than if you send me an email. My inbox is so full these day, the last thing I want is one more “check this out” email.
So, back to how this is related to offline marketing. Simply its human relations, networking, and brand development. The benefits one can obtain from building HUMAN relations is huge. So, don’t discount it just because Google doesn’t factor in your friends when they rank you. Having connections is of extreme benefits.
I just wanted to rant about that. I spend hours link building just like everyone else, but at the end of the day the I love jumping into Vic’s chat, shooting the shit, sharing ideas, and working with others on products. The people I’ve met and the doors that have opened just by wasting an hour a day chatting is ridiculous.
So, when you need a break from link building: Go network. Go socialize. Go on twitter, get on Facebook, go to your social networking site. Support other people’s projects and help others out. Put out good karma, because it’ll come back to you in ways greater than any link can provide.
