Social Marketing & Social Bookmarking

If you aren’t using social media sites to generate buzz, than you’re missing out. There are a variety of social sites on the internet and they can benefit your site in a variety of ways. Some are great for networking and brand awarness, some increase your overall exposure on the web, and some actually help generate back links to assist in your SEO.
Social Bookmarking Sites
The first type of social sites I want to introduce you to are online bookmarking sites. These sites function just like your favorites / bookmarks in your browser, but your bookmarks get published on their site for you to share with other people. You can tag them and give them decriptions. Others can than browse through this collective community of bookmarks by toplists on the sites, or by browsing tags, or simply by searching.
Bookmarking sites provide two types of benefits. They increase the amount of traffic you get by allowing people to come to your site directly from on of these bookmarking sites. Many people hang out on these sites and usethem to find new sites they’re interested in. From an SEO perspective, these sites also create another benefit, and that is back links. Some of these sites have nofollows, but some don’t. The ones who don’t, provide you with a low quality back link each time you are bookmarked. Its even worth grabbing some nofollows off these sites, because like I mentioned in my lesson about Pagerank and Links, Google isn’t 100% accurate and sometimes follows them.
Social Bookmarking Ethics
There is an ethical concern about using these sites for SEO. Is it White Hat or Black Hat? Well, it can be both. I personally think every site is missing out by not at least bookmarking 1-3 pages they like off their site on each of these sites. There is nothing wrong with you having your own account and bookmarking your site. The gray area comes when you create multiple fake accounts on multiple sites and add multiple links to your site on each of these accounts.
The ethics of these behaviors is a personal choice. Getting a few links from 1 account on each site is far from ethical. The more accounts and links you generate, the more “gray hat” it becomes. Those who get greedy and spam these sites might get banned from them. Getting banned from these is not a good thing, but its not a Google ban.

Scuttle Sites
Another form of bookmarking sites, are scuttle sites. Scuttle is an outdated bookmarking software without any real admin control panel. Many people launched these sites, they flopped, and have been abandoned. They have turned into free for all links sources for SEO. These are really low quality links. The same ethics apply to these sites as other bookmarking sites. Is your call on how you choose to use them.
Other Social Sites
Myspace
Everyone should know what Myspace is by now. It is a online community and networking site, where you can have a personal profile and pictures. You can have friends, leave comments, and communicate. Its a great way to find people in your area and to network with other businesses in your area.
These provide no backlink value, but can extend your companies exposure and brand awareness. It will also assist in networking with locals and others in your field.
Similar to Myspace, but better in our opinion. Its a cleaner site,with out as much junk. You can join networks based of of having access to a network’s email. For example, students from a university can join a universities network if they have a university email. The ensures that access to these networks are legit. Facebook also has more complex privacy options to block and allow based of different criteria. The benefits of Facebook are the same as Myspace.
Twitter is a kind of mini feed / mini blog. It allows you to post updates or status reports to your twitter account. Then those following you will receive these updates in real time. Its a great way to communicate dynamic important information. Twitter can be used to promote your site, but serves no SEO purpose. Its just an extra way to market yourself.
StumbleUpon
StumbleUpon is a neat site. You install a toolbar and you can bookmark and review sites you like. StumbleUpon learns your interests and also allows you to select tags you’re interested in. Then, you can click the stumble button to take you to a random site that may interest you. If you like it, you can bookmark/review, and keep stumbling. This is a great way to drive HUGE amounts of traffic to your site, especially if you have an entertaining page to market. This is poor quality traffic and provides no SEO benefits.
Indirect SEO Benefits
Although some of these sites do not provide direct back links, they do create exposure. This exposure might result in someone bookmarking your site on a site that does provide SEO benefits. Sometimes, they might link your sites from their blog or site. And there is always the chance of them sharing the link in a forum. These can all help generate links and drive traffic to your site.
Quality of Social Traffic
Social traffic is considered to be low quality non-targeted traffic. PPC and SEO allows you to target people looking for specific key phrases. When you know they’re intention, than you can provide them what they’re looking for. This means higher CTR, more customers, more purchanses. A lot of social traffic is not targeted and generally browsing in a random fashion. Social traffic doesn’t click ads. I would avoid using StumbleUpon for example on a site with adsense.
