Automate Social Bookmarking

by Justin on October 4, 2008

With the growth of Web 2.0, has come the explosion of social bookmarking sites. It didn’t take internet marketers long to notice these sites could be used for link building. And that’s when we all started asking about “How to Automate Social Bookmarking“.

Before you get started with automated social bookmarking, let me warn you. Automated link building is at its minimum light gray hat SEO and can get into very dark gray or black hat SEO. This is not the type of link building that Google likes, but it works, so we’re going to talk about it. So before you use any automatic social bookmark submitter, consider the risk and be cautious not to spam social sites.

Social bookmarking sites are online bookmarking sites that grew heavily with web 2.0. An example of these is Delicious. Delicious is a bookmarking site, where sites like Digg are social news/voting sites. These sites allow you to submit sites you like. Many of these sites now nofollow their links, but several still continue to follow their links. In addition, these sites can produce direct traffic and increase your site’s presence on the internet.

Bookmarking Demon is a social bookmarking program that automates social bookmarking. It can automate the production of accounts and submit links to many social bookmarking websites. It can submit to several mainstream sites, as well as Scuttle sites, Scuttle Plus sites, and Pligg sites. Anyone interested in automating bookmarking for links, should check out BMD. I would consider it the best social bookmarking program. Of course it’s not free, but well worth the price in my opinion.

Brief Social Bookmarking Strategy Tips

Going full force with automated social bookmarking tools can quickly get you in trouble. Below is a lists of tips I would recommend when developing your social bookmarking strategy.

  • It’s a game of volume. These sites produce low quality and low PR links. This is about producing massive quantity.
  • Work your anchor text. Put effort into using your anchor text when submitting. These are low quality links, at least get your anchor.
  • Vary your anchor. Don’t use the same anchor all the time, this is Google bombing. Use semantically related keywords or long tail phrases in addition to your exact primary keyword phrase.
  • Reduce your footprint. Don’t use the same set up each time. Mix up your keywords. Mix up your account. Be paranoid. Do everything you can to hide from Google and your competition.
  • Mix your sites with other sites. Randomly inject your sites into a list of other sites that you do not own.
  • Tag your stuff well. Tag as much as you can without spamming. (like previous tips mentioned, randomly mix this up. Don’t leave a footprint)
  • Don’t spam! You will get banned from social sites!
  • If you’re going to really hit the bookmarking hard, consider investing in a regularly updated list of proxies.

This isn’t a full how to, but keep these tips in mind when you set up your sites to bookmark. These programs already save you hours of time by automatically submitting all your websites to several bookmarking sites on several different accounts. There is no need to get greedy. Again, if you do not have BMD, I would highly recommend that you check it out, especially if you work high volume. Be careful though. Make sure to be responsible and to hide your tracks when you are automating social bookmarking.

Where would you suggest looking to get proxies?

I’ve been using BMD by pulling proxies down using Forum Proxie leacher and then scrubbing them through AccessDiver and then plugging them into Bookmarking Demon.

Unfortunately, I get a terrible submission rate when doing this. Just today I did a run using this method and the link to the article was only submitted to 9 out of 87 sites submitted.

I switched over to not using any proxies and ran it again. Successfully submitted to 53 sites this second time.

My feeling is that the proxies are to blame in some way/shape/or form.
