Are Low Quality Links Worth It?
August 26, 2008 By: Justin | 32 commentsA video to address the worth of low quality links and why you should not ignore lower quality links like article marketing. Addresses the concern many new people might have. Its a little long (around 30 minutes), but has some good information.
This video continues the discussion of article marketing and link building. It is prompted by some questions about why should someone use article marketing if the links are low quality or discounted. The post rambles a little (especially towards the end), but I think its an important message for anyone who keeps finding that they’re going no where with link building.
I start off by talking about the general view about links than many “newbies” have. I believe too many people stress getting the “perfect link”. As a result, many people hinder their own link building by over stressing it.
Article marketing has a lot of benefits, which I discuss in this video. It provides great anchored related links that can be used to build links for long tails, niches, and specific posts. In addition, it provides diversity in your link profile by helping you build a massive number of links.
I talk briefly about how links have an combined effect, where your link profile creates an authority that is different than just the sum of the parts.
Lastly I close with a kind of rant. Basically, test stuff and try stuff. Get to work. And Get links.
I mentioned several programs and links in this video, which I said I’d link to.
These two programs were mentioned, which are solid SEO programs.
- SEO Elite - Great tool for link and competition research
- Keyword Elite - Keyword Research Tool
These are the two article submission programs/services I mentioned
- Article Marketer - Article Submission Service
- Article Submitter - Program for submitting articles
I also suggest that you install these two Add Ons for Firefox
- SEO Quake - Firefox Add On for research SEO a factors
- SEO for Firefox - Similar to SEO Quake, used to research SEO factors
- Link Analysis (think I mispoke in the video, it works well with SEO for Firefox) - Shows anchored text for links
Make Money Search Engine - Quickly search all major MMO blogs

Hey guys, finally getting around to making a post after the move. I’m going to give video blogging a try. Let me know what you think. Should I keep with
How To Get Links With Article Marketing
The most important part of SEO and the part people have the hardest time with is getting links. Everyone always asks how to get links to their site that will

Hi Justin,
Great stuff. You hit the home run when you said about people complaining about the quality of the links they get. I don’t think there is any high PR blog left in this world that is willing to link you with a dofollow. LOL.
I argued sometime back in my blog that when it comes to traffic to our niche stores, I would prefer quality to quantity as I would rather have 5 visitors who actually makes a purchase coming rather than 500 who drops in just to have a look.
In this case however, I certainly don’t mind about quality. The more the merrier. Heck, I even learned to love my sploggers. :-)
Hi Justin,
I want to ask something. Can I trigger penalty for same anchor text for example if I submit one article with 2 anchors through isnare or AM it will point many links with same anchor text. Please elaborate on this. Thanks…:)
You don’t sound like an asshole, you just tell it like it is.
I just think people are afraid to do the work or they are just afraid of success. You just took the words out of my mouth in your video “Just go do something”.
Thanks for the video, I found you by way of Vic.
Bcarter,
Thanks for the comments =)
Yeah, I think the same thing that hinders people in real offline work hinders them online. I want everyone to do well, but the truth is that some people don’t have it in them to get organized and manage work themselves. Then they have to force themselves to get to work.
Btw Justin,
how is your site paramore lyrics doing? Does it make you any money?:) From that position in google and how much visitors do you get if I could ask? Thanks
It’s doing “ok”. It was never meant to be a “money maker”. I made the site for my girlfriend. She’s in love with Paramore and involved with a lot of stuff with that band. So technically its “her” site. I did the set up and promotion and she put in all the content.
I did want to see if I could make some money with it. I tried a few affiliates like ringtones and busted tees; neither converted well. And adsense isn’t good for the site. I need to take it off because it gets priced.
I put off promoting it since it isn’t a “money maker”. It does have decent PR though. So I might use it for some link exchanges or as part of my “network”. And I felt comfortable sharing it because it isn’t a money maker.
My gf enjoys having the site and she isn’t worried about the money, so it just kind of chills at the bottom of page 1. And traffic. It gets a few hundred visitors a day or so. Not all are from Google, because it get some referral traffic from my gf’s signature in some forums she’s active in.
I’m going to do a case study though soon on a site I think will make good money. I’m going to develop it and update each week on what I do and track the stats. Then after like 2 months (once its up and a good rankings) I’ll share the site so people can see it.
wow it will be really interesting case study…looking forward to read from you more…:))
Hey Justin! Another added bonus for articles submission can be traffic. One of my niche blogs #2 source of income in from ezines. Granted the site only gets about 20 visitors a day. But hey, it’s still getting me $1.00-1.50 a day. I’m still in the dreaded Google sandbox :(
I have been reading Vic, Court and Griz’s blog for the past 6 months or so. You have some great content going here. Keep it up!
did you mention there’s a free version of article submitter? or is there only a free version of article marketer?
There are free versions of both
Thanks for the link to that link analyzer. Been looking for something like that for quite some time now. I haven’t gotten around to being able to invest in SEO Elite yet but with the link analyzer along with SEO quake; I’m able to offset that loss a little bit.
Hi.
Thank you for mentioning SeoQuake in your video!
if you have any ideas how we can improve it - let me know.
Justin I’m sorry to keep pestering you but I’m on a fierce disinformation campaign (been reading too many so-called “A” listers for WAY too long) and I’m trying to get things straight from people who actually pay their rent with internet marketing.
I’m building my first real niche site (BANS) and so far in a little over a month link-wise I have 3 squidoo lenses, a myspace, 2 Youtube vids, several do-follows comments, 20 or so nofollow comments, and 5 original targeted articles pointing to my domain and pages on my domain. I also have links pointing to some of those various links so I can start building “depth”. By the way there are 10 store pages on my BANS site, all with good content.
My question is with my 5 original articles in particular. I only submitted them to 2 article sites (3 to one high PR article site, and 2 to another high PR article site). I’ve only submitted them to 2 because I read somewhere that submitting the same article to multiple sites is bad because of too much duplicate content from the people using the articles. I’m judging by this video though and what I gather from Vic, Court, and Grizz, that it doesn’t matter, just submit to all of them.
Can you address duplicate article content for me briefly? It’s just that it takes me over an hour to create a good original article because my niche is semi-technical and I don’t know that much about it and it hurts to see them wasted on only 2 article sites if I can leverage them better. Also, if you can very briefly let me know if my link buildig strategy is way off or not.
Again, thank you so much for your time Justin. You guys are the best for helping us out.
If those articles are also found in your website than the best thing to do is write 2 versions of the article that will pass copyscape; one for your site alone and the other for article directories.
If not, then I wouldn’t worry about “the people using the articles” getting docked for duplicate content; it still amounts to you getting backlinks which is the main purpose of article submissions.
Justin: If I am wrong in this than I apologize as I, too, have followed those “A” listers at one point and so my SEO is a bit off.
Thank you John. Yeah, they definitely are original from my site’s content and other articles. I think the point the blog I read it on was trying to make was something to the effect of “if all those backlinks pointing to your site all have identical content, they’ll do more harm than good because the search engines would see it as spam and penalize you” or something to that effect. I should have known better and checked to see if the blogger was legit, but I was even more green then than I am now and I couldn’t spot a faker from a real money maker a mile away.
All right I just found this video. Make money call to action Vic kicks ass, I’m overthinking things. I’ll just submit them to more directories. Off now to build more links.
Hey Justin,
Great video! How many times do you submit an article to article marketer for one of your sites? Once, Twice, more?
Ron
does anyone know the link to the free version of article submitter?
I can’t seem to find one.

Hey Justin,
Great video, extremely informative and addresses many of the myths surrounding link building. Sorry to be off topic, but I had a quick question that’s somewhat puzzling me. I have a niche site targetting several keywords, and ranking for them really well (positions 1 or 2). Wordtracker reports that these keywords are receiving between 50 - 90 searches a day. However, none of them are bringing me any sort of traffic. Is this an issue with wordtracker accuracy, or is there something else going on?
Thanks
Good Stuff man. Love the way you explain everything to the detail. What you said about using article marketing and other “low quality” links to rank for low competitive key-words is right on. People need to understand that you are talking about a market where there are no heavy hitters targeting the same key-words. Also you were dead on with diversifying your “link portfolio.” Site owners should try to get a wide range and array of links including powerful sites with high PR, as well as lower quality links. Think about it….. it is only natural in the eye’s of the search engines for a site to have all these types of links. If one fairly new site, with not a lot of content…. only has 10 links and they are all PR8… that looks kind of weird to the search engines…. Almost as if those links were purchased.
Geez!!!
I’m glad that you’ve decided to continue on with video blogging…lol. I really appreciate that you’re taking the time to help us noobs, “seasoned” veterans, and us pie squaters. The funny thing about you, Vic, Grizz, and Court giving advice is when people start arguing about the advice given. I understand that some people really want to understand what they’re doing at the same time of following the advice. However, those who are just nay sayers and complete pessimists makes those who really want to learn kinda look bad.
“The proof is in the pudding” would hopefully be the the sign looked for when people take the advice, or discredit the advice given. It’s sad that there are people who don’t seem to understand that you Guys are giving this advice for free, to help defog and clarify what is true and what isn’t true about MMO - including getting us away from the scammers. Again I want to just show my apppreciation…I’m going to submit some articles now, so thank you for your advice!
Hi Justin,
Thanks a lot for the great (and free :-) internet marketing information.
I understand from you (and vic and griz) that link building is so important. I recently subscribed to article marketer (very frustrating experience to get your first article out, but I’m sure it’ll get better in the future).
Anyway, I’m interested to hear what other tools you can recommend. I understand Bookmarking Demon is a great tool. Did you try any of the other ones (such as SENuke, Web2Submitter, Traffic Kahuna, etc …). There’s so much tools becoming available (a lot of them very costly) that it’s quite difficult to pick the best tools.
Any tools you can recommend for directory submission? Any paid link providers you can recommend?
Sorry to bother you like this. I’m just excited :-)

Anyone who does not take advantage of a complete and diverse link building strategy, including articles, directories, recips, social etc… I WILL BEAT YOU EVERYTIME IN THE SERPS game!
Justin,
I’ve been following your blog for awhile now so I’m trying to put this together. Regarding your post on the Diminishing Marginal Utility of Links do you think there’s a threshhold of using Article Marketer to promote particular site where it’s not useful anymore? 10 articles, 20, 30?
I think I read on Court’s blog or maybe it was guest poster Mark was replying that he once had 30 articles to promote a site (this was in regards to whether a burst of article links would sandbox a site). But is that really necessary and would that many be pointless to a certain point?
Hey Justin,
Thanks for explaining again the idea between the linking and article marketing. I like how you explain the way you need to look at the blending of ideal and low quality links. Bottom line, sounds like take the link if you can get it. Any link, outside of the bad areas, will help in some way shape or form.
What Im doing is trying to do at least 2 articles per day on AM and rotate the sites I have. And, I am seeing the links show up. and they have the perfect anchors.
Just need time now to let the links and age come into play and let things settle in.
Im assuming we’ll see you at the Academy…you gonna be a professor?
Thanks for putting the whole link thing to bed. Don’t second guess, just take the link…..
Matt
Hi Justin, I just wanted to say how clearly you explained everything. I’m new to SEO and need some results badly. Due to so many different opinions flying around, I can see how some people end up doing nothing! You got to the point- Great post and thanks form the UK!
Man, by coincidence I was just thinking of this the other day, and then I find your post on it lol. Crazy.
Is there a like a ratio of low quality links to high quality links you decide on, like based on the keyword search volume, the competition on the SERPS etc?
I’m just guessing that if it was a low search, easy competition keyword you could get away with more low qual links, is this true or am I just chatting breeze here?
I’m of the “any link is a good link” school, but I do have to say that getting a good, solid anchored link from a high PR page can have some sweet effects. Nothing like seeing your main keywords linked out from a relevant PR5 page to make yourself feel like you’re getting somewhere. However, we shouldn’t just obsess about these amazing links without continuing to get basic ones.
BTW, I’ve sent you an e-mail through your contact form about a potential link building related idea/opportunity.
Justin, what do you think of BMD or programs like CommentKahuna? I think it has been asked over at Vics Bike Shed before, but what’s your opinion please?

This really is a great post for all of us newbies who know nothing. I’ve been going through and reading your posts and watching the video.I am one of those who knows nothing about seo or anchor links or anything in IM. I’ve been trying to learn and have two blogs that so far are going nowhere and now I see why. You explain everything so that it’s understandable so I get it. Don’t pay any attention to the nay sayers it’s probably people who just like to argue or start trouble. I appreciate all the information and will use it.
